The story
Before GTA III, the series was top-down. In 2001, Liberty City went 3D and invented the modern urban sandbox: an open city, a third-person camera, and total freedom to make it all go wrong.
Left for dead by his partner Catalina during a bank robbery, the silent protagonist Claude escapes and works his way up Liberty City's criminal hierarchy: the Leone mafia, the Triads, the Colombian Cartel, the Yakuza. Three islands, Portland, Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale, unlocked one by one.
Everything that defines a modern GTA starts here: stealing any car on sight, following the story or causing chaos, a cult radio dial and a city that runs without you.
The blueprint every open world has copied since.
GTA III is available today through the Definitive Edition, included in the GTA Trilogy, on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC, or on mobile. Original PS2 and PC copies can still be found secondhand.
