On PS5, a game never runs from external storage. It is the console's most misunderstood rule, and it is what brings most players to this page.

Two situations lead here: your internal SSD is already full, or you would rather get ahead of it before GTA 6's preload opens on November 12, 2026. Either way, the answer is the same: an internal M.2 NVMe SSD expansion, not an external USB drive.

Why PS5 requires an internal SSD and refuses external storage

Since launch, the PS5 has drawn a hard line between two kinds of storage. A USB external drive can hold a PS5 game, but never run it directly: you have to transfer it back to internal storage or an M.2 expansion first. That limit does not apply to PS4 titles running on PS5, which do play fine from an external drive, though GTA 6 ships as a native PS5 game, so that exception will not apply to it.

Since a 2021 system update, PS5 has supported installing a second M.2 NVMe SSD in its dedicated expansion slot. Once installed, that SSD works exactly like the original storage: games run natively from it, no transfer required, at the same speed.

The Sony requirements, in plain terms

Not every M.2 SSD on the market works in a PS5. Sony has published a precise set of requirements; ignore them and you risk an SSD that throttles itself, or simply does not fit the bay.

M.2 2280 format, and why other sizes do not always fit

The PS5 expansion bay accepts lengths 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110, but 2280 (80mm) remains by far the most common on the market and the easiest to pair with a compatible heatsink. Checking the exact length before buying avoids a surprise when you open the box.

PCIe Gen4 and the 5,500MB/s threshold

PS5 natively runs PCIe Gen4 x4. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s to take full advantage of the console's load-time architecture. A cheaper PCIe Gen3 SSD installs without issue but runs below that threshold and does not make use of what the PS5 is built for.

The heatsink: the requirement everyone forgets

This is the top driver of product returns according to several specialty retailers: an SSD without an integrated or compatible heatsink overheats and throttles itself under sustained use. But the opposite causes problems too: the PS5 expansion bay is narrow, and a heatsink that is too thick keeps the cover from closing. Models sold explicitly as PS5-compatible, with a heatsink sized to fit, remove that guesswork.

What capacity to pick for your library

No official figure exists for GTA 6's size yet, see our guide to GTA 6's file size and storage for the detail. Capacity mostly comes down to your existing library, not GTA 6 alone:

• 1TB: a reasonable starting point to cover GTA 6, its updates, and a handful of other titles without weekly trade-offs.
• 2TB: for a library of ten or more games installed at once, or to stop uninstalling one title to launch another.
• Under 1TB: the savings do not offset the constraint, on a game this size.

Installing the SSD in a PS5: the 8-step process

Budget about 15 minutes, Phillips screwdriver included. The PS5 needs no other tools.

1. Fully power off the console (not rest mode) and unplug the power cable. Let it cool a few minutes if it was just running.
2. Lay the PS5 flat, remove the stand, then slide off and lift away the side panel without forcing the clips.
3. Locate the M.2 expansion slot cover, held by a single screw. Remove it with a Phillips screwdriver.
4. Unscrew the pre-installed standoff screw, then reposition it to match your SSD's length.
5. Insert the SSD into its connector at roughly a 30-degree angle, then lower it gently until it rests on the standoff screw.
6. Screw the standoff back down over the SSD to hold it firmly in place.
7. Replace the cover, screw it back in, then reattach the side panel and the stand.
8. Reconnect and power on the console. The system detects the SSD and offers to format it from the Storage menu.

After installation: format, transfer, verify

Formatting takes under a minute once started from the menu the console offers. The SSD then shows up as a full storage location under Settings then Storage: games can be installed there directly, or moved over from internal storage through the same menu. No extra restart needed.

The PS5 Pro case: do you still need an expansion

The PS5 Pro ships with 2TB of internal storage, about 1.8TB usable once the system is accounted for (the full per-console breakdown is in our guide to GTA 6's file size). That headroom pushes back the point where an expansion becomes necessary, without ruling it out past roughly fifteen AAA titles installed at once. Rockstar has not announced a PS5 Pro-specific mode or optimization for GTA 6 to date, and this guide assumes none.
