One week before launch, two things happen at once: boxed copies ship and digital preloading opens. The game itself stays locked until the 19th.

November 12, 2026 is not the GTA 6 release date. Worth saying upfront, since the two dates get mixed up constantly: the game launches November 19, at midnight local time in each region. What Rockstar triggers on the 12th, seven days earlier, are two separate mechanics that set up that launch: boxed copies shipping, and digital preloading opening.
Both dates are official and public. What is not public yet is the download size: that will only be known once preloading itself opens. Our guide to how many GB GTA 6 will be covers what is verifiable today, backed by manufacturer numbers.
Buyers of the boxed edition receive their package starting November 12. Inside: a case with a download code, not a Blu-ray disc. That code activates on a PlayStation or Xbox account, and the console still needs to download the full game before it can run.
The same day, the GTA 6 listing on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store opens for early download, for any account that already owns the game, whether purchased digitally or redeemed from the boxed code. This is also the first moment the real file size becomes public: a number Rockstar has not published anywhere before this date.
The process works the same way in principle. From My games and apps or the game's page on the Microsoft Store, select Download once preloading is open. Connected standby, enabled by default on most Xbox Series consoles, lets the download continue while the console is not in use, as long as it stays plugged in and is not fully powered off.
Nothing triggers automatically when the package arrives. Once you have the box in hand, go to Account then Redeem Codes on PS5, or Redeem on Xbox, and enter the code included. The game then appears in your library and preloading can start, exactly as with a digital purchase. Getting the box early on November 12 does not speed anything up by itself: entering the code is what matters.
The exact size is not known before preloading opens. What is verifiable right now is usable storage per console: 825GB advertised on PS5, about 667GB usable; 1TB on Xbox Series X, about 802GB usable. The full breakdown, console by console, is in our guide to GTA 6's file size.
If space is short when preloading opens, the download either will not start or will stall partway through. You would then need to restart it after freeing space, right as server traffic peaks ahead of launch.
The internal SSD fills up fast
Clearing space the night before November 12 leaves little margin. Our PS5 SSD installation guide covers compatible models if a cleanup is not enough.
A preloaded game is not a playable game. The files sit on the console, but a software lock keeps it from launching until the official release time. The PlayStation Store listing shows this unlock at 23:00 UTC on November 18, which corresponds to midnight in Paris. In the US, unlock timing runs on local midnight per region: PlayStation Store and Xbox listings typically localize the countdown to the account's own timezone, so Eastern accounts unlock first and Pacific accounts last. Rockstar has not published a separate US-specific timestamp as of this writing; checking the countdown on your own store listing close to launch is the reliable way to confirm your exact unlock moment.
A day-one patch is close to standard for a release of this scale, layered on top of whatever is already preloaded. GTA Online, if its content follows the saga's usual pattern, will add its own volume through updates over time, though neither its schedule nor its size is known today. Keeping headroom beyond the number shown on November 12 stays useful even after a full preload.

Preloading is only offered to accounts that already own the game or have redeemed the box code. The two guides below cover where each edition stands, with prices as observed.

November 12, 2026, seven days before release. That is also the ship date for boxed copies, which contain a download code rather than a disc.
Yes. Preloading is only offered to accounts that already own the game, whether bought digitally or redeemed from the code inside the box.
The exact download size is not known as of September 3, 2026. It will appear on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listing once preloading opens. Clearing generous free space before November 10 is the safest approach.
No. The files download but stay locked. The game unlocks at official launch, November 19, at midnight local time in each PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store region.
No. The GTA 6 box contains a code to redeem, not a disc. You still download the full game, exactly like the digital version.
That is close to standard practice for a launch this size, though Rockstar has not confirmed a day-one patch specifically. Leaving headroom beyond the size shown on November 12 is a reasonable precaution.
