How many GB is GTA 6, and will your console have room

Rockstar has not published a number. What is verifiable is the manufacturer data: real usable space on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Series S.

GTA VI and Grand Theft Auto are registered trademarks of Rockstar Games, Inc. This site is not affiliated with Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive. Storage figures for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Series S come from Sony's and Microsoft's official spec sheets; GTA 6's install size has not been published by Rockstar. Confirm details with Rockstar Newswire before purchasing.

How many gigabytes: nobody knows, and it is not for lack of looking. Rockstar has not published a spec sheet for GTA 6, no number, no official range. The first reliable figure will only appear when preloading opens, November 12, 2026, seven days before launch.

What is verifiable today are the technical specs published by Sony and Microsoft: the space you actually have on your console, once the operating system is subtracted from the number printed on the box.

What Rockstar has actually said about install size: nothing

No spec sheet has been published for GTA 6 to date, not on the Rockstar Newswire, not on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store listings, which show a price but no size indicator. That is not an oversight: publishers typically communicate a game's exact size once its download listing goes live, which happens when preloading opens on November 12.

That gap has not stopped some sites from publishing numbers presented as settled, occasionally even as confirmed. None of it is, anywhere. This guide keeps two categories strictly separate: what console makers publish officially (available storage, a Sony or Microsoft fact), and what nobody knows yet (GTA 6's real weight, a figure that depends on Rockstar alone).

Real usable storage on each console, manufacturer numbers

The figures below do not come from Rockstar, they come from Sony's and Microsoft's official spec sheets. They say nothing about GTA 6 specifically, but they set the ceiling on what you will be able to install, whatever its final size turns out to be.

PS5 and PS5 Slim: 825GB advertised, what is actually left

The PS5 and its Slim revision ship with an 825GB SSD. Once the operating system and reserved space are subtracted, usable storage drops to about 667GB, a figure published by Sony. That second number is what matters for what you can actually install, not the one printed on the console's box.

PS5 Pro: 2TB, the comfortable margin

The PS5 Pro doubles that with 2TB of internal storage, about 1.8TB usable after system overhead. A real cushion, though it assumes no GTA 6-specific optimization: Rockstar has not announced a dedicated PS5 Pro mode as of today.

Xbox Series X: 1TB advertised, the usable space

The Xbox Series X ships with a 1TB internal SSD, of which about 802GB is usable, a figure published by Microsoft. The Seagate Storage Expansion Card remains the only official way to add capacity without touching the internal SSD.

Xbox Series S: the tight case

The Xbox Series S ships with 512GB, down to about 364GB usable. It is the most exposed console in the lineup: under half the usable space of a Series X. If GTA 6 lands in the range some outside observers are floating (more on that below), a Series S that is already fairly full will not have room without uninstalling something first.

Console Advertised storage Usable space
PS5 / PS5 Slim825GB~667GB
PS5 Pro2TB~1.8TB
Xbox Series X1TB~802GB
Xbox Series S512GB~364GB

The internal SSD fills up fast

If space is already tight on PS5 before GTA 6 even arrives, an internal M.2 NVMe SSD expansion is the only real fix for a native PS5 game. Our PS5 SSD installation guide covers compatible models.

What GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 weighed at launch

On PC, GTA V weighed 95GB, a figure already verified for our PC requirements guide. On consoles, though, Rockstar never published a precise install size for either GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2, not at launch and not since. This guide will not pretend to know a number that exists nowhere.

What can be observed safely is the pattern: both games grew after release, through patches, content expansions (GTA Online chief among them), and enhanced versions for newer consoles. A day-one Rockstar game is never the same Rockstar game two years later, and nothing suggests GTA 6 will be an exception.

Why games grow after release: day-one patch and updates

Launch on November 19 will not be a size ceiling. A day-one patch, close to standard for a production this size, will add to whatever was already preloaded. GTA Online, if its content follows the saga's usual pattern, will add its own volume through updates over time, though neither its timeline nor its exact size is known today. Planning headroom beyond the first number shown on November 12 is a reasonable precaution, not overcaution.

The boxed copy downloads everything anyway

One thing surprises boxed-edition buyers often: it does not contain a disc, just a code to redeem on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store. The game then downloads in full, exactly like the digital version. Owning the physical box does nothing to reduce the storage space needed, or the download time. Full details on each edition are covered in our release date, price and platforms guide.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions: GTA 6 size and storage

How many GB is GTA 6?+

Rockstar has not announced it as of September 3, 2026. Numbers circulating on other sites, including some presented as confirmed, are not backed by any official source.

When will we know the exact size?+

At the latest when preloading opens, November 12, 2026: the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listing will then show the real download size.

How much free space is really available on a PS5?+

The PS5 and PS5 Slim advertise 825GB, with about 667GB usable once the system is accounted for. The PS5 Pro moves up to 2TB, about 1.8TB usable.

Does the boxed copy take up less space than digital?+

No, and it is counterintuitive. The GTA 6 box contains a download code, not a disc: the game downloads in full, exactly like the digital version. Required space is identical.

Can GTA 6 be installed on an external USB drive?+

On PS5, not to play it: a native PS5 game like GTA 6 requires the internal SSD or an M.2 expansion. An external drive can only archive the game. Xbox Series works the same way, outside backward-compatible titles.

Should I free up space now?+

GTA 6 preloading opens November 12, 2026. If space is short at that point, the download will not start and the evening of the 19th goes to waiting instead of playing. Clearing space before November 10 is a reasonable safety margin.
