The story
San Andreas is Rockstar's most ambitious swing in 2004: an entire state, three major cities (Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas) and miles of countryside, desert and mountain between them.
Carl "CJ" Johnson returns to Los Santos after five years in Liberty City. His mother has just been killed, his old gang is falling apart, and corrupt cops set him up the moment he steps off the bus. From there, the story takes him through rebuilding the Grove Street Families and far beyond.
The game pushes everything further: light RPG mechanics (CJ gains muscle or weight), aircraft, gang recruitment, territories to conquer. A playground that shaped an entire generation.
The biggest sandbox of the PS2 era, still imitated twenty years on.
The cleanest option today is the Definitive Edition (included in the GTA Trilogy) on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC, or the remastered mobile version. Classic copies are still available second-hand for purists.
